Stakeholders from Sorong dan Manokwari District Attended Disaster Preparedness Management Workshop in Yogyakarta

In response to the requests from Sorong and Manokwari District for post earthquake assistance after the two districts were hit by earthquake in January 2009, DBE1 conducted disaster preparedness management workshop. The event took place in Yogyakarta and Klaten from July 22 to 24, 2009. The participants from each district comprised of representative of District Development and Planning Board, Education Office as well as school supervisors and principals/teachers. The workshop aimed to build capacity of district stakeholders in disaster preparedness management. Stakeholders also learned to identify and prioritize medium and long-term reconstruction requirements for schools in case of earthquake/natural disasters in the future.

During the three day workshop, various parties who were involved in mitigating the impact of the earthquake in Yogyakarta and Klaten shared their knowledge and experience on methods for rapid assessment of casualties and damages as well as earthquake resistant building construction. The participants also visited earthquake-hit schools which had been reconstructed by DBE1 under the Public-Private Alliance Program between USAID and ConocoPhillips.

All participants were grateful for the opportunity to attend the workshop. They pledged to begin the efforts for coping with earthquake/natural disaster. Representatives from Education Office mentioned that they will revise certain items in this year’s budget so they could set aside funds to disseminate information regarding strategies for coping with earthquake/natural disaster among Education Office staff and selected schools. Representatives from District Development and Planning Board also promised to approve the budget changes. Meanwhile, principal and teachers, with help of school supervisors, planned to disseminate the information during schools meetings at cluster level.
